Iron is an essential trace element, but it is not recommended to add excessive amount of it to total parenteral nutrition (TPN) because it affects the mixtures stability. Nevertheless, the variable iron contamination has been documentated in the components used to prepare TPN. This contamination must be taken into account by the compatibility limitations regarding lipids destabilization.
