This study examines the use of an online English learning platform within an energy company in
Argentina through the lens of adult learning theory and andragogy. Using a quantitative casebased approach, the research analyses platform-generated data corresponding to one year of
employee participation. The study focuses on patterns of engagement, level progression, study
continuity, and participation in learning activities.

Throughout the twentieth century, English progressively consolidated its position as the
dominant medium for global communication. This development has been shaped by a range of
geopolitical and historical factors, which have intensified in recent decades. In contexts such as
professional networking, business expansion, and technological advancement, adopting a
global perspective has become essential in order to facilitate effective cross-cultural
communication. Consequently, fostering communicative competence has become a priority
within language education.

In 4th-century BC Greece, a group of wandering scholars, the Sophists, were dedicated to
teaching young men the art of persuasion. The Sophists attracted criticism from fellow
philosophers for monetising their teaching, while others provided instruction without
remuneration. Furthermore, they were accused of teaching how to distort or manipulate the
truth to win an argument.

The reason why people in general may regard certain variations of a language in different ways, is a
question that has been tackled several times by different scholars. People interpret the language they
are exposed to taking into account factors like the intrinsic signs in the speech, the context in which
the speech is being produced, the stereotypes and preconceptions they may have towards the
speakers. Some accents may sound more attractive than others, or the language people produce may
make them sound intellectual or pretentious. This phenomenon can be explained through different
approaches and theories of sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics introduced later on.
